
Limpopo is proud to host four of the first-round matches of the FIFA World Cup 2010 in Polokwane. The World Cup will take place from 11 June to 11 July 2010 in South Africa. This is the first time that this tournament will be hosted by an African nation.
The Limpopo Province has the largest number of registered football players in South Africa, which explains the enthusiasm about being able to host some of the world cup matches in Polokwane.
The 45 000-seat Peter Mokaba Stadium (named after the late the political activist during apartheid and former President of the ANC Youth League) in Polokwane. The stadium is specially built for 2010. Construction Costs are estimated at R716 million and the completion date is set for July 2009.
The stadium has a bushveld theme and the the four corner columns supporting the roof represent the Baobab trees.
