The Mapungubwe Hill is a World Heritage Site. Until its demise in the 13th century, the kingdom that surrounded this sacred natural stronghold was the most important inland settlement in the subcontinent and extended over an area of about 30 000 square kilometres on either side of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers.
