Limpopo, with its magnificent scenery and prolific wildlife, provides endless opportunities for the hiking fraternity. Not only do Limpopo's trails cater for the nature-lover, they also open up a vast new world of culture, as some of the routes travel past old rock-art sites or mythical places such as the sacred forest where vhaVenda royalty is buried.
Various landowners and private nature reserves offer day and overnight hikes on their properties. The mountainous terrain of the Soutpansberg range and the Blouberg to the west of it are ideal for hiking - the Soutpansberg Hiking Trail takes hikers 75 km across magnificent countryside from Hanglip to the Entabeni State Forest along the range's rocky spine.
Hiking options are also offered by the Kruger National Park and adjacent private game reserves. Along the borders of the park hikers can encounter the 'Big Five' while on foot. One of the best hiking experiences lies within the Wolkberg where the Iron Crown Mountain and Serala are situated. The Iron Crown Mountain (so-called because of the ring of ironstone around its peak) is still reachable by vehicle but Serala is the largest true wilderness area in the province. Here you have to rely on your own bush and map-reading skills to survive the often adverse terrain and weather conditions.
Close by in Magoebaskloof is the Rooikat Trail in the New Agatha plantations, some 18 km from Tzaneen. The trail follows a circular route of 11 km and takes about five hours to complete. In the same area Safcol's 'Big Five' Magoebaskloof Trail Network leads through the beautiful indigenous forest of Magoebaskloof, following mountain streams and rock pools, in the process opening up this scenic area, with its excellent birding opportunities, to the nature connoisseur.
The western part of the province is also very popular with the hiking fraternity, with various hiking opportunities existing in the Waterberg between Thabazimbi and Mokopane. There are no huts or marked trails in the scenic Wolkberg Wilderness Area but it is a treat for the experienced self-sufficient hiker. The reserves and private farms offer good day-hiking and bush-walking, but hikers are advised to take precautions against ticks and malaria.

Hanglip Hiking Trail is a beautiful trail, especially since sections of it have now been rerouted to take in more indigenous forest. The facilities have also been upgraded to provide for the needs of the hiker.
More improvements are planned for the months ahead in line with Komatiland Forestry's commitment to ecotourism. Some of us older hikers will remember the old Soutpansberg Hiking trail in the days when it was established as a five day backpack trail which stretched from Hanglip over to Ou Entabeni Hut.

The hills surrounding the valley are dotted with caves. Many of these are silting up or filled up long ago and are re-opened by local quarries in search of limestone.
During one such search during mining operations in the 1920s, a large number of fossil bones were blown out of a particularly large cave in the area. It was not fully investigated until 1947, when it was confirmed that there were remains of Australopithecus africanus or early man.

The Wolkberg Mountains have a number of interesting and beautiful dolomite caves. The best- known,Wolkberg Cave, rivals Cango for scenic splendour.
This cave system just outside Potgietersrus is more a cultural experience than a caving expedition. The caves provide a record of human development from the hominid Austrolopithecus africanus to stone age and iron age humans.
It also has great historical significance as it was here that the Boers besieged the people of the Langa and Kekani tribes, led by Chief Makopane, after whom the caves were named. The Arend Dieperink Museum runs tours to the caves but they must be booked at least a week in advance. At time of writing, the caves were closed for maintenance but were due to reopen towards the end of 2000.
