Walking Safaris

Walking safaris are one of the most rewarding ways to discover and experience the secrets of the bush, true wilderness and wildlife. Guided walks in "Big Five" areas are offered at selected lodges throughout Limpopo.

Guests are briefed prior to their excursions into the wild, the rangers providing informal tuition regarding the procedures to be followed on the walks.

Early morning and evening game drives are conducted in open 4 x 4 Safari vehicles and together with Guided foot Safaris are included in the quoted rates.

Walks and drives are conducted by qualified Rangers. Sundowners are enjoyed at various breathtaking scenic spots.

All of our staff at Umhlametsi are experienced, qualified and dedicated to the conservation of the Reserve. You are encouraged to experience a bush walk where you will be amazed by the intricate wonders of the African bush.

This is where the Umhalmetsi experience is so different and dedicated. The Rangers point out not only the Big 5 but all the other fascinating components of the Fauna and Flora that are often overlooked.

Walks are carried out during the early mornings. The duration of walks is up to an hour and a half, and the average age of our lion are between 3 - 18 months. All walks are professionally managed and supervised by a qualified conservation ranger.  

A leisurely walk with a lion at your side is an experience like no other.  Watch the lions play in their natural environment, while you have the opportunity to walk, and touch them.

Learn more about these extremely powerful cats and their natural behaviour in such close proximity.    At the halfway point you will be given the opportunity to bottle feed the baby cubs and take photos. 

The interaction between these lions promises to be a different kind of spiritual connection between man and animal.

Your Kruger wildlife safari starts with a dawn walking trail, led by your safari guide and tracker, who will read the signs of the wild, and interpret them for you.

Experiencing the African wilderness on foot is particularly special ,it enhances all the senses. Afternoons are dedicated to shorter safari walks, and game drives in open safari vehicles, culminating in a night drive, to view nocturnal animals such a civets, genets, and African wild cats.
