This area is the flagship of one of the sub-routes of the Greater Limpopo Birding Routes and is organised by the Birdlife South Africa and sponsored by Glendower whiskey and a number of establishments in the area. This is the fourth year that this popular event on the South African birding calendar is held.
The festival will celebrate the rich biodiversity of these forests, so there will be lectures given by specialists in forest birds, trees, fish, frogs, mammals, butterflies and reptiles, as well as outings into the various forests of the area. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the Afromontane forest of Woodbush and Black Forest as well as the riverine forests at Debengeni Falls and on the upper Letaba.
Lectures will be given by experts such as Mark Anderson, director of Birdlife SA, André Botha of Endangered Wildlife Trust and Derek Solomon, expert birder and guide. They will also accompany the outings and, together with local experts, try to make sure you tick off all your desired specials.
The programme starts with a gala dinner on Friday evening. On Saturday morning there will be guided outings in small groups to various locations in the Magoebaskloof area, followed by lectures and lunch at the Magoebaskloof Hotel. More outings will take place in the afternoon, followed by dinner and a fun-filled evening with great prizes to be won. Sunday will start with some more outings to interesting locations, followed by a lecture and lunch.
Registration is open from 12:00 noon on Friday and the programme ends at 14:00 on Sunday. The costs are R650 per person, which includes Friday’s gala dinner, lunch on Saturday and Sunday, three guided outings and several lectures.
Accommodation is not included in the price, but the Magoebaskloof Hotel offers accommodation at greatly discounted rates for Festival participants. Alternatively there are several other birder-friendly establishments in the area, which offer accommodation and flexible services especially tailored for birders’ needs.
Local bird guides and birders will accompany all the outings to ensure that no birds are overlooked. The exciting programme allows participants to experience the biodiversity of the beautiful forests of Magoebaskloof while catching glimpses of Black-fronted Bush-Shrike, Cape Parrot, Bat Hawk and Green Twinspot.
