In Haenertsburg, the event consists of a 75km Mazda marathon, a 40km FPC half-marathon and a 15km fun ride. Mazda Haenertsburg marathon and FPC half-marathon: This event arrived new on the scene 3 years ago and while some worried that it would mirror the well-established Magoebaskloof Classic, the organisers showed that this area has more than enough variety to prevent any overlap.
The event comprises the 75km Mazda marathon, the 40km FPC half-marathon and a 15km fun ride. This year the start/finish venue has been moved to Stanford Lake College which provides a great atmosphere with the grass banks from which one can watch the finish while having the lake in the background.
The 75km course is a demanding route that heads into the Wolkberg Mountains. It includes a lot of climbing and varied terrain that requires a reasonable level of fitness and technical expertise (possibly the reason that most riders chose the half-distance last year).
The 40km course is a new, more-manageable (but definitely not flat) route that will be more likely to encourage riders back. It is a challenging route that traverses scenic plantations on forestry roads and incorporates some single-track and river crossings. Racing starts at 08h00 with the marathon, followed by the shorter events at 10 minute intervals.
The race venue will be abuzz with activity where participants are offered, medical services, showers, music and a festive atmosphere as well as a selection of eating and drinking places. Cash prizes to the value of R15 000 will be awarded and spot prizes will be handed out. There is also a prize to be won by the fastest cyclist (male and female) through the speed trap on the marathon route.
