Hunting

The hunting infrastructure consists of provincial and private hunting farms and lodges. The former allows potential hunters to tender for a certain quota of animals and, for a fee depending on the size of the catch, allows the seasonal hunting of animals that would otherwise be culled for population control. A set of laws clearly states the prerequisites to hunting, such as permits and the monitoring of animal species and numbers.

Many would consider the act of hunting antithetical to the efforts of conservation, but the province proves the opposite to be true. In 1997 it accounted for 63% of all hunting in the country and its over 900 hunting farms brought in over R500 million from beds and trophies alone. That is an undeniably large industry, particularly for the conservationists, who receive direct funding from these revenues.

Hunting in South Africa is strictly regulated and controlled by PHASA, which established a Wildlife Conservation Fund in 1999. The fund's mission is "to establish a financial resource which will be used to assist PHASA and the professional hunting industry in its efforts to promote and maintain the wise consumptive use of the natural resources of South Africa".

As a direct result of controlled hunting in Limpopo, at present there is more game in the province than in the early 1960s. The hunting infrastructure consists of provincial and private hunting farms and lodges. The former allows potential hunters to tender for a certain quota of animals and, for a fee depending on the size of the catch, allows the seasonal hunting of animals that would otherwise be culled for population control.

That is an undeniably large industry, particularly for the conservationists, who receive direct funding from these revenues. In fact, farmers who previously owned cattle and often had over-grazed lands are now converting to ecological hunting farms, which are at once more profitable and environment-friendly. At one such farm, rhino hunting involves the use of tranquilliser darts in place of bullets, generating money for the survival of this endangered species.
