Modjadjikloof

Information

Modjadjikloof lies in an unhurried fertile area of exquisite beauty at the entrance to the Lowveld and is a pretty village with panoramic vistas on to the surrounding Wolkberg Mountains. As green and lush as Tzaneen, its former name Duiwelskloof ('devil's gorge') is said to have two possible derivations: the village got its name either from the sticky wet mud of the area, which presumably made transport 'devilish' for the early settlers, or from the early settlers who may have regarded the purported magical rain-making powers of Modjadji the work of the devil. One thing remains true, however, and that is that the origin of the town's first name remains a mystery. Visit the EFAF Elephant Training facility at Mooketsi near Modjadjikloof and witness the mystery and magic of the African Elephant. These elephants come from troubled backgrounds, where they faced disaster. Learn how trusting, intelligent and forgiving these amazing animals really are.
