New technology fights poaching in the Kruger

The Postcode Meerkat wide-area surveillance system was officially put into operation in the Kruger National Park at the end of January following completion of the first production model. The system was developed through a partnership between SANParks, Peace Parks Foundation (PPF) and South Africa’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

The new surveillance technology and specialised long-range optics installed in the Meerkat system can detect poachers operating under cover of darkness.

Luxury safari lodge launches new family suite

Tintswalo Safari Lodge in the Manyeleti Game Reserve has added a two-bedroom family suite.

The Grant Suite is connected to the main lodge and offers two en-suite bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, a lounge with a private deck and a plunge pool. The suite can accommodate children from the age of nine.

Grant Suite guests can enjoy two game drives a day in a private game-viewing vehicle, a tracker and guide.

SANParks will launch its inaugural Tourism Investment Summit at The Maslow in Sandton on March 27.

Fundisile Mketeni, CEO of SANParks, said the summit would present new investment opportunities, attract developers and financiers, and profile national parks in South Africa as viable investment hubs.

It aims to attract key decision-makers in tourism investments, which include financiers, lenders, developers, tourism retail and services operators, bankers, investment advisers, real estate, property consultants, financial intermediaries, government tourism officials and media.

Tourism gets R494 million boost

An additional R494 million (€35.81m) has been allocated for tourism promotion, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan announced in his 2017 Budget Speech on Wednesday.

The additonal allocation will be welcomed by industry that has long called for government to prioritise the sector.

Gordhan emphasised that tourism was one of the sectors that could be utilised to encourage investment. He said in order to boost investment in the short term, the government must give focused support to labour-intensive sectors, including agriculture, agro-processing and tourism-related services.
