15.10.08The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) in conjunction with the South African Council for Space Affairs (Council) will host the World Space Week Celebrations at the University of Limpopo (formerly Turfloop) on 24 October 2008 under theme “Exploring the Universe”. The aim is to bring together both universities to a common place.
The purpose of the event is to raise awareness about space in general, space science & technology and space regulations amongst students and educators in the faculties of Science and Law from both University of Limpopo and University of Venda.
Students and educators will be addressed by invited speakers from government and industry such as the chairperson of the Space Council, Advocate Luthado Mkumatela, Director of the South African Astronomy Observatory, Dr Peter Martinez, Manager of the Hermanus Magnetic Observatory, Dr Sandile Malinga and Mr. Wabile Motswasele from the Satellite Applications Centre.
Videos on space will be screened for the students to watch space activities in the country and abroad. Students will also be supplied with brochures and booklets on space science and technology. There will also be activities for students to enhance their interest in space-related careers.
