18.09.09(The Par Three That Gives You Vertigo by Simon Osler)... My heart was racing as I stood over the ball, waiting to smash my driver on a long par-3. Why the pounding heart? It’s just a golf ball after all, and the green is at the bottom of the hill, er, mountain.
How far? Only 631 metres away. Has the world gone crazy? Is it a computer game? No, this is the ultimate in golf, the Extreme 19th at Legends Golf and Safari Resort in the Waterberg region of Limpopo.
This is a special hole, one only accessible by helicopter, which takes people up from alongside a perfectly manicured green in the shape of Africa.
It’s about 40m wide and 60m long, and instead of being surrounded by water, it has a 4m wide bunker around the continent. Your pilot will give you a white-knuckle ride towards the top of Hanglip mountain and set you down on the edge of the 400m precipice. Straight down.
That sound a bit dramatic? How about standing on a dusty tee-box 4m wide and 2m deep. Your momentum on the followthrough takes you close to the edge.
Its the hardest golf shot in the world, and more than $US1 million awaits the player who can score a hole in one.
