05.03.10Hikers can enjoy a brand new trail in the north of the Kruger National Park. Like the park’s other wilderness hikes, the Mphongolo Trail doesn’t always follow the same route; you hike across open veld with two guides and trail is determined by what you run into along the way.
The trail is in the wilderness area between the Shingwedzi and Mphongolo rivers. There are hot springs, koppies and beautiful trees, including leadwoods and baobabs. “Visitors to this area will notice that the environment is completely different to what you’d see along the tourist roads to the north,” says Andrew Desmet, Kruger’s manager of guided activities.
The region is known for its elephant and buffalo populations, and many bird species. You need to be fit enough to carry your clothing, sleeping bag, a stove, tent and enough food for four days. You may camp in one place for more than one day, but be prepared to carry all your gear all the way. You and the guides are transported into the wilderness area from Shingwedzi, and picked up again four days later.
A group has to have a minimum of four and a maximum of eight people. No children under 12 are allowed, and anyone older than 65 needs a medical certificate.
