06.07.11For 17 years he resigned supreme, one of South Africa’s legendary lion kings. A magnificent male boasting impressive courage and immense physical strength, Medala Madoba-the pride of the 22,000 hectare, malaria-free Big 5 Entabeni Safari Conservancy in the Waterberg area of Limpopo-was a favourite with both game rangers and visitors because of his sheer size.
One of South Africa’s largest lions, Madala Madoba was a long-standing leader of the pride at the reserve where the Big 5 roam wild and free, with his regal attitude and powerful stride. Such was the respect for him among the conservancy’s resident carnivores, that when he was eventually overpowered by his cousin and had to step down as a leader of the Entabeni pride, his lion queen Makula Mafasi remained loyally by his side.
Today, Madala Madoba, has passed away after becoming frail with old age. But although this memorable male has gone to the great hunting ground in the sky, his legacy will live on his courageous offspring, Mapimpan.
