10.07.09The Limpopo Province offers vast tropical and diverse terrain with a wide range of bird species which include some of the rarest in the world. There are numerous sites that one can visit, but the most unusual species are found by those who travel off the beaten path.
Great local birding can be found at Langjan Nature Reserve and the Hans Merensky Nature Reserve which is also home to the spectacular Tawny and Steppe Eagles as well as the Spock Thick Billed Cuckoo.
Other excellent birding spots include Waterberg and Marakele, Nylsvlei Nature Reserve, Percy fyfe Nature Reserve, Blouberg Nature Reserve, Polokwane Nature reserve, Magoebaskloof, The Southpansberg, The Venda Miombo Woodland, Pafuri River Camp, UNESCO World heritage site Mapungubwe National Park and Tuli Block situated on the border with Zimbabwe and Botswana.
The birds found in these areas include the 2nd Largest Cape vulture colony in the world, Black Coucal, Southern Hyliota, Pel’s Fishing Owl and the White- Backed Heron.
