26.12.09A new R600-million regional shopping centre is scheduled to open its doors in September, 2011, in Lephalale, in the Limpopo province.
The Lephalale centre will be developed on a 12 hectare site in Onverwacht, in the Greater Lephalale area, adjacent to the existing town centre of Onverwacht.
The development includes a 42 000 m2 shopping centre, of which the R400-million first phase will comprise between 32 000 m2 and 35 000 m2.
In a linked project, developers also plan to build a 17 000 m2 office park on the 2,8 hectare site adjacent to the shopping centre, to serve businesses in the area.
“Lephalale is at the centre of a very exciting area that has shown tremendous growth, which is geared to continue. Retail is an important part of any community and, as Lephalale’s economy evolves, it is important to have retail which serves its needs, and benefits the community on multiple levels,” says the Moolman Group's Jannie Moolman.
Lephalale is the biggest municipality in the Limpopo, with a geographical size of some 19 605 m2.
Underpinning the area’s economic growth are a diversity of industries, with Eskom's new Medupi power station also under development nearby.
The retail development is estimated to create a thousand permanent jobs.
Construction on the Lephalale shopping centre is expected to begin in mid-2010.
