Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve in Limpopo

Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve
Regions: Vhembe Region
Towns: Musina

Set in the Limpopo valley amidst rugged sandstone cliffs and ancient baobabs, the 36.000 hectare De Beers’ Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve is a piece of old Africa.

Just 80 km from Musina in Limpopo Province, the reserve is adjacent to and forms part of Mapungubwe National Park – site of southern Africa’s first kingdom. A World Heritage Site, Mapungubwe is also part of the Limpopo-Shashe Transfrontier Conservation Area.

Venetia and surrounding areas are home to over 400 bird species. A trained guide is available to help discover the region's specials, which include the elusive Pel’s Fishing Owl, Three-banded courser, Pennant-winged Nightjar, Meyer’s Parrot, Meves’s Starling, Senegal Coucal, Thick-billed Cuckoo and Tropical Boubou.

However, Venetia is also well loved for its wildlife which includes the lion, elephant, black and white rhino and elusive wild dogs. Radio tracking (telemetry) trips are offered for both wild dogs and lion, which substantially increases the chance of seeing these sought after species.

Highlights & Activities: Visits to Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site, and sundowners overlooking the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo rivers.

Bird watching accompanied by trained guides, game drives, guided walks to view Bushman paintings and archaeological sites, a 4x4 eco route, radio tracking of wild dog or lion.
