Mokopane

Game Drive - Waterberg (Wel Gewonden)

Mokopane (previously known as Potgietersrus) is a mining and agricultural centre. There are several nature reserves in the vicinity. Among them, the Potgietersrus Nature Reserve supports indigenous and exotic game, and is maintained by the National Zoological Gardens as a game breeding centre.

The Mokopane area is one of South Africa's richest agricultural areas producing wheat, cottan, beef, maize, peanuts and citrus fruits. The Zebediela Citrus estate, 55 km to the south-east, is one of the biggest citrus farms in the southern hemisphere. (The biggest citrus estate in southern Africa was handed back to its original owners in 2003 when Land Affairs and Agriculture Minister, Thoko Didiza, gave title deeds and full ownership of the Zebediela Citrus plantation to the Bjatladi community.)

The move saw 300+ families return to their ancestral land after losing their rights to the land in 1914 following the enactment of the Native Land Act of 1913. The property has been operated as a commercial citrus estate for the past 85 years, and was owned by the former Lebowa homeland government.
