Limpopo Province; Polokwane: The collaborative efforts by Limpopo Government, Polokwane Municipality and South African Football Association (SAFA) to bring the South Africa-Lesotho 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier game to the new Peter Mokaba Stadium on the 21st of March 2025 was a resounding success. Tickets for this showcase were reportedly sold out by midday making Limpopo Province another home of Bafana Bafana, where their encounter with Lesotho resulted in a victory of South Africa by 2-0.
Efforts by the marketing stream of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) to visit all districts of the province with activations supported by the South African National Supporters Union (SANASU) to encourage and call for soccer lovers and the public in general to fill up the new Peter Mokaba stadium for this spectacle was not in vain. The Premier, of Limpopo Province, Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, was very elated and she said, “Limpopo comes tops in everything the province does. We are so excited about the successful hosting of this game, but we are also ready for another spectacle should an opportunity for collaboration to host arise”
The Bafana Bafana victory of 2-0 over Lesotho at the new Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday evening, saw South Africa rising to the top of Group C in CAF’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. The team now enjoys a two-point lead over second-placed Benin. The team and the coach are also excited about Limpopo having been an excellent host with a warm welcome from the Premier and leaders in the province.
There is optimism that the successful hosting of this spectacle will be the confidence booster to the province as a preferred sports destination with capacity to host games of this magnitude. This and many more other sporting events to come will no doubt heighten the province’s sports tourism profile. The province is rich in culture and heritage, in which visitors from other countries should be emersed. Limpopo Government wishes to thank the citizens the province having come in droves to support the national team in its journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
